Policy note

Storm damage in a houseboat

Storm damage is read against what the wind actually did that day, and the conditions set out the kind of damage a storm is expected to cause.

What follows is the ordinary position at Noorderdijk. The policy schedule and the conditions document together are what a claim is assessed against, and where this note and those documents differ, those documents are the ones that count.

A houseboat is insured as a vessel with a home inside it. The hull, the mooring and the shore connection are three separate things on the schedule.

What the policy covers here

  • Damage to the roof, the gutters and the chimney caused by wind.
  • Damage caused by a tree or a branch coming down on the building.
  • Temporary work to keep the building watertight until a proper repair.
03

What it does not cover here

  • Tiles that were already loose before the wind found them.
  • Fences, aerials and garden furniture, which have sections of their own.
  • Wind below the strength the conditions name.

The weather record for the day is public, so the strength of the wind is rarely the part anybody argues about. What was already loose usually is.
